ABOUT

David Ian Roberts makes music in his adoptive home of Cardiff, Wales.

While always connected in spirit to the work of the great 20th century folk guitarists and singer-songwriters, his recorded music is continually evolving, and explores complex harmony and wide sonic landscapes. At times highly composed, and at others incorporating improvisation and collaboration, Roberts' songs can always be traced back to the solo guitar and vocal performance.

He has released 4 full length albums to date. 'From The Harbour' [Cambrian Records 2020] was described by Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 2 as "A quiet masterpiece - one of the albums that I'll cherish in the future". It also garnered praise from Guy Garvey on BBC6 Music - "Beautiful and very hypnotic - I love its freedom and its ease".

UNCUT called 2019's 'Travelling Bright' "A quietly exceptional album...Roberts writes deeply introspective songs and renders them in rich orchestrated widescreen."

His self-titled 5th full length LP was released in March 2024.

“David Ian Roberts’ Travelling Bright greets Spring perfectly as he sings of kings of sunsets and ancient holloways”

Jude Rogers - THE GUARDIAN

“Travelling Bright is a quietly exceptional album, dreamy and intimate, but borne up on rich elaborate arrangements…. [Roberts] writes deeply introspective songs, and renders them in rich orchestrated widescreen… dreamlike soliloquies, steeped in mythology and the natural landscape, and presented with an airy spaciousness that carves out avenues for the mind to wander.”

Louis Pattinson - UNCUT

“Travelling Bright positions itself within the UK folk tradition with humility, honesty, and sincerity—a recording for the listener to savour and of which its creator can be proud.”

“An intimate performance of astounding artistry. Lyrically his songs draw a line from Dylan Thomas to Elliott Smith, with hypnotic melodies and guitar patterns that match even the legacies of a Nick Drake or Sufjan Stevens.”
